Scholarship Opportunity

The American Chemical Society offers an awesome scholarship program for minorities and women. They prefer to give the scholarship to young African American and Latino scientists with a GPA above 3.0. If you meet these criteria, I encourage you to apply by March 1st.

Guest Speakers

Just about every week, each department has a guest speaker from another university or a company come and talk about their research or something else that a bunch of professors and graduate students would like to hear about. I strongly encourage you to attend at least one of these talks sometime this semester and then write about your experience on this blog. It might give you a much better feel for whether you like the field that you are studying. It also may give you an idea of where the cutting edge of research is.

Determination of a Chemical Formula

Figure 1. Calcium Hydroxide solution with indicator.

The most common question I get when my students are doing a titration is when to stop. The endpoint of a titration is easy to overshoot. For that reason, I have taken a picture of what color your solution will be before, at, and past the equivalence point. You should stop titrating when your solution looks yellow, like the compound in the middle Erlenmeyre Flask.
